Our Services
Writing a business book can be one of the best ways to stand out in your market, build social proof and share your expertise but where do you start?
When I began the process of writing my book, The Entrepreneurs’ Guide to Self-Publishing I spent the time to research my avatar and develop a clear comprehensive plan for the outline of the book. This investment in time helped me complete the first draft in ten weeks and kept me on track. This is the process I share with my authors and it is my passion to take away the frustration of staring at a blank page.
Why writing a book is good for business
- A well written professional book establishes your credibility and expertise
- Offers PR and speaking opportunities
- Lead generation for building your email database
- Can lead to a diversified income stream, including developing a course from your book
- Helps you stand out in a crowded market place
- Offers you a mountain of content you can repurpose
Some of our authors come to us with a seed of an idea and while others have written their first draft only to be told the book was written for a number of avatars, in other words a book for no one.
If this resonates with you, working with a book coach could be the answer you are looking for. Our process ensures you create a clear plan from the beginning. You will develop the strategy around:
- Why you are writing
- Who you are writing for
- How your book will help your reader
- A clear plan for the books purpose
- How the book will help you and your business
Writing a great must-read business book that aligns with your audience can be a game-changer for you and your business and this process can be made easier working with a coach, using the right tools and having the support network you need.

Your first draft is written
No matter how you choose to publish your book the editing process can be one of the most daunting stages and at Dettori Publishing we aim to take away this stress. We work with you to determine the type of edit required to produce a quality book.
You’ve drafted the manuscript… What’s next? Unfortunately, very few people can edit their own work effectively. To achieve a polished look, you might like to consider a professional edit. Dettori Publishing recommends employing an experienced editor to read your manuscript and, at the very least, provide a manuscript assessment. This is when an editor reviews your book and recommends improvements. Following this are three types of editing services:
- Developmental edit (also known as structural edit)
- Copy-edit
- Proofreading
Developmental edit
This focuses on the overall structure, content and style. The editor will specifically look at: narrative, voice, plot, pace, characterisations, dialogue, readership, title, length and presentation and provide a review and suggestions. Some grammar, spelling and punctuation may be edited, however this edit will not correct all errors.
The benefit of obtaining a developmental edit is that it provides you with professional advice on the overall aspects, allowing you to rework and polish your manuscript.
Copy-edit
A copy-edit is the most thorough edit, and ensures a smooth interaction between author and reader. Points checked include: narrative, voice, plot, pace, characterisations, dialogue, readership, title, length and presentation; grammar, spelling and punctuation; style; accuracy; copyright applications and legals etc.
Proofreading
Proofreading is generally the final edit which will check all spelling, grammar, punctuation, layout and styling. Naturally we recommend you proofread your manuscript several times beforehand.
Copy-editing and proofreading are an essential step to produce a high-quality book but remember as a self-publishing author the final say is with you. We recommend you listen to the feedback from the editor and give it serious consideration as it their role to make your book the best it can be.
Typesetting is the process of arranging the text for printing. The aim of good typography is to ensure that reading the book is an effortless process, and that there is no conflict with the overall design. Ultimately, typesetting aims to produce a visually beautiful, professional book considering: font choice, font size, margins, line length, images and layout, headings, page extent and more.
We use Adobe InDesign to create all our files and work to a traditional publishing standard, to see some of the books we have typeset go to postprepress.com.au

The reality is that the majority of readers do ‘judge a book by its cover’. Self-publishing means you have total control over the design of your book and this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. Remember your cover needs to both appeal to the reader and tell them what your book is about.
Cover Design
A quality book cover is crucial to the success of your book’s sales. Whether it’s a printed book or an ebook, your cover needs to be striking enough to draw the readers’ attention and to entice them to read the book description. The idea is to connect with the reader emotionally, and ultimately entice them to buy it. Successful covers usually have big type face, simple graphics and bright, high-contrast colours. A well-designed cover is the reader’s first indication that the book is high quality. You should think of your cover as the first page of your story and, as such, it should reflect your genre. If you need some inspiration for cover designs, head to your local bookstore or online to research how other books in your genre design their covers.
We ask you to complete a design brief and then one of our designers will provide you with sample concept designs which you will provide feedback on. This will then be refined and polished until you are happy with the cover.
Internal Design
Beautiful typesetting and design should look effortless, so ironically it will often go unnoticed by the reader. Independent Ink offers a variety of design solutions to suit your needs. We can design the layout of your book based on your chosen genre, style and samples.
If your book is highly styled, such as an art book or cookbook, we can refer you to one our experienced designers in this area. We have contacts in all genres of work, or alternatively we can collaborate with you to design the perfect internal pages.
When considering the format of your self-published book, there are many factors to bear in mind. Should you go with a printed book, an ebook, or both. Certainly the cost to produce an eBook is more economical as there are no printing costs; however with expansion of many Print on Demand (POD) options, a printed book has become more affordable these days.
Consider the pros and cons. Does your book suit the ebook or printed format better? Who is your target reader? Do they read ebooks or printed books? Will it be gifted or for personal use?
Ebook formats
- EPUB
EPUB is the most widely used eBook format. It displays on most smartphones and tablets (with the exception of the Amazon Kindle). EPUB comes in two styles – reflowable EPUB and fixed-layout EPUB. - EPDF
EPDF is an eBook format converted from a PDF, with table of contents support on eBook-reading software. It will look exactly as the printed version, like a fixed-layout EPUB. However, EPDFs do not display as double-page spreads, and they don’t allow the reader to increase or decrease font size. EPDFs are suitable for reading on any smartphone or tablet, except the Amazon Kindle. EPDFs are not supported for sale on Apple iBooks Store or Amazon eBook store. - Mobi
Mobi is an eBook format for exclusive use on the Amazon Kindle and sale on the Amazon eBook store. It is not supported by Apple iPhones, iPads and Android devices. This format is very limited and bare-bones in its appearance.
We will arrange to have your masterpiece converted into an ebook format for you.
Print-on-demand (POD)
Print-on-demand allows authors to print small runs of books or print books to order, as they are sold. This new printing technology has helped the self-publishing industry expand at unprecedented rate. POD companies store your book in their system ready to be printed whenever an order has been placed.
Independent Ink can help you choose a printer, or help you to manage this process yourself. We offer assistance in online distribution and listing on platforms such as Amazon, iBooks, D2D.
